Summary:

International law does not identify the right of the nations for self determination together with the right for secession. However, it does not forbid this kind of right to be performed. It prefers the guarantee of territorial integrity of the state to the right of one part of inhabitants for a unilateral secession from the original state, which it basically does not allow, especially if the states and their governments follow the obligations in respect of their inhabitants. The nation can enforce its right for self determination only by non violent means and in principle in accordance with the constitutional (internal) law of the given state.
